    I wonder why she has to give out all of that information just to buy a crock pot? I’d go somewhere else, in that situation.

You can guess they are up to mischief when they want to know how many appliances and family members you have in your home. This can become public domain, and open to sell to anyone.     Whenever a cashier asks me for my phone number, I give it to them—with one number wrong. That eliminates the hassle of refusing but makes it impossible for them to put me on a telemarketing list.
