‘When Mark Antony said, ’Lend me your ears, that was just an expression!’
Carol Burnett did a great skit on this, where Van Gogh gives his sweetheart his ear, she says, ‘Oh, I don’t know what to say,’ and Van Gogh says, ’Huh?"

Back in the day, there was an exhibit of his works. Pranksters put up a dried out piece of gristle or whatever, with a sign saying it was the ear he had cut off.

As I age, I have figured out why our parents chuntered about how our music “is just noise.” It’s not necessarily the music, it’s older folks’ hearing range. Suddenly the lyrics are just mush…not because they’re terrible (it happens with songs I love, too) but because we’ve lost part of the range.

They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they’ll listen now

    re: orinoco

depends upon the era. For example, when I was in junior high, rock was still the standard and some of it like ELO (their last real album was when I was in high school in 1986. Zoom wasn’t up to their prior standard.) was pretty good.
    .
Unfortunately Hate Music like Rap was getting going in the mid 80s. I thought it was junk then and still do.
    .
I still don’t like country because it has about 3 songs—

the ballad (he lived, he died, he loved, he cried, and the audience fell asleep because they’ve heard it all before),

the sad song (waaaa. everybody’s hurt me baaaad),

and the gonna get even song (waaa. I hate those that hurt meeee. Get the bulldozer) — with endless redos on those themes.
    .
Same reason I don’t like modern “praise music” with 3 chords and endless repeats of non-Biblical phrases or Bible phrases out of context.

To make the point on the latter, in one of my books, I was analyzing praise music and used two pages of repeats of the same phrase. While exaggerated, it wasn’t that much of an exaggeration.

@Nabuquduriuzhur: Well, there’s rap music I actually like, but granted, it tends to be the exception rather than the rule, and for the most part I agree with most of the rest of what you said.

But you forgot to mention the most horrible, grating, unpleasant music genre of all: polka. I’m convinced that in hell there’ll be a thirty-second loop of polka music that repeats over and over forever.

French rap is actually pretty darn good. Not “hate music” but biting social criticism with real point.

I have to agree with you. My music tastes are pretty wide, I’ll listen to rock, classical, opera, jazz. I don’t consider rap to be music at all. I do recognize there is talent at work with some of them, but it is closer to prose/poetry than it is to music.

It took me a number of years to understand why I hated country music. It’s lazy. I grew up playing in concert bands, singing in choirs, etc. Country singers are always sliding around the notes instead of hitting them precisely the way a well trained singer does and it frustrates me.

jonadab: Polka: Bavarian um-pah played by a half-drunk C&W band, I can agree. Strauss polkas played by the Vienna Philharmonic, I can’t agree.

When I think of French music, I only think of Alizee. Can’t understand the words, but I could watch her videos all day …

I like Jazz, mainly because I played a trumpet in a school band.
