Because it never even hits the floor.

I’d never heard of the 5 second rule before about 2 years ago. Was that something the media came up with?

Nah, the media 5 second rule has to do with attention span.

No chance of cookie even hitting the floor in that house!

More like an urban legend / myth type of thing. Pretty certain that myth busters even debunked it at some point.

I’ve known about the five second rule for about 20 years, but it was always a joke. It’s only in the last2-3 years that people actually thought it was a real rule.

I always pictured a battalion of bacteria lined up, and as soon as something hit the floor, their general would call for a charge :)

But yeah, it was always a joke for dropping a cookie or something on the floor and an excuse to eat it without feeling to guilty.

It’s not polite to talk with your mouth full.

How about the ‘dogs get sick on chocolate chips’ rule. Or are those raisins?

If both food and floor are dry, the 5 second rule applies.
If either are wet, then it’s not applicable.
If you have a dog, you don’t have to worry about it.
If you have 2 or more dogs, you likely have a ‘food fight’ under-foot!

No, It’s something that the kids ‘believed’ in when I was young. If you picked up your dropped goodie with in 5 seconds (and in some cases ‘kissed it up to heaven’) it was safe to eat.
Mythbusters did a test and got mixed results. For things that where both the item dropped and the floor was dry there maybe no germ transfer. However in most cases germ contamination was immediate.
