The rationale that my mom told me is that when women go in the middle of the night, they might be drowsy enough to sit down without checking whether the seat’s up. I’d point out that if men were that drowsy, they’d pee on the seat. (I learned to put the seat down anyway.)

My husband insists we put the lid down when we’re done. Aggravating in its way, but at least we all know we have to lift the lid before doing our business, no matter how drowsy/out of it we are.
