   Actually, the trend is to spell it with just the apostrophe now, for the simple reason that “Mars’s”, although technically correct, looks odd to the eye. However, you are right about “it’s” vs. “its.”The problem is that the “-’s,” as it is used here, is normally used to show possession in nouns (as the vestigial remnant of the original Old English Genitive case), so it’s being incorrectly added to pronouns to do the same thing by way of analogy.

   Capt. Odom is not the most skilled of lecturers. In that, he reminds of a captain who lectured to my Air Science class in college. He is soporific, like too many lecturers I have heard….

   Ewww . . . Jason: I-T-apostrophe-S is the contraction of “It Is,” NOT the possessive form of “It!” The possessive is “Its.” PLEASE! Don’t join the makers of illiterate nameplates and personalized matchbook covers!
