The version I heard was about right- and left-handed batters and pitchers, in the episode with “Who’s On First?” Is that the same one you’re thinking of?

Which I believe was 1946 or 1947 – at any rate, Camel was giving cigarettes to VA hospitals instead of to fighting units, with the result that every patient the internsat our VA hospital discussed ca 1988 had COPD; and when I moved to a community hospital, the first question about any patient with COPD was, “Is he a vet?”

No, the bit I heard was Abbott testing Costello’s nautical knowledge by quizzing him the same way Mutt was quizzing Jeff, and it was the same right down to the punchline.
