    Just to be nerdy: Miswak was a very primitive but incredibly effective, plant-based toothbrush that has been used for centuries (not just by Arabs, but in all Islamic cultures and even some far-east countries as well) before the modern toothbrush was invented. No oral-B, no triple sensorical fumbugating rotators, no quadruple anti-tartar effect etc. (and of course, no 40-dollar price either…)

    A simple piece of peelu tree (although it’s been made of other trees too, I heard) it not only cleans the teeh, but also has a nice odor. And all without toothpaste.

    In that sense, it’s really a manly man’s toothbrush. Just like Rambo doing self surgery without anesthetics, you brush your teeth with a piece of wood, without paste and with little to no water.

    @Puddlesplatt McLearn

    It’s very soft, the fibers won’t break and therefore won’t leave splinters. It’s made of a part of a tree, true, but it’s not a vampire stake.

    My grandparents had a powdered baking soda (sometimes with mint flavor added) with which to brush. I like the idea of a fragrant fresh twig (perhaps from a large herbal tree.

    A quick search gave me:
    Licorice, neem, senna, arak, birch, persimmon, eucalyptus and elm are woody plants a person can use as a toothbrush.
