    There are many pitfalls associated with eating peanuts

    @Number Six

    Agreed.
    Or at least, release a Fleshy compilation.

    Anyone can catch a Moondog; squirrels are tough.

    Thank you for pointing that out, Monty; though I think most of us could get it on our own. Moondog (one must conclude) is not as bright as the average squirrel (who would avoid that rather obvious trap)….

    A good gag made great by the way that his hat and glasses hang in the air after his fall.

    A couple of comments:

    1)Even if a squirrel fell in there, what’s to stop them from just climbing out? An animal that can climb up the side of a tree and walk on a electric power line like a tightrope walker could surely climb up the side of a hole. You need a cage kind of trap to catch an animal like a squirrel.
    2) How did Monty fall in the hole in the first place? In the third panel it shows he was leaning forward to pick up the whatevers, if he did that consistently, he shouldn’t have been in any danger at all. He would have had to walk directly on to the leaves to fall in and if he had he would have fallen in feet rather than head-first as depicted.

    Fleshy has the makings of a first-class big-game hunter. Unfortunately, he’s going after small game!

    In answer to #1and #3: it’s a comic.
    In answer to #2: Monte didn’t fall in the trap at all (hint, if you look real close you can see that it was Moondog that fell into it).

    Ahem.

    As to #1: Clearly the ploy was to capture the squirrel as it climbed out of the hole; the squirrel would be distracted by the fearsome climb and become easy prey for Fleshy. Fleshy is not one to waste energy extracting the rodent from the trap.

    As to #2: As oldpine noted above, it was not Monty that fell into the hole. Nonetheless, since you clearly meant Moondog, it is obvious to any skilled observer that Moonie was distracted by the eating and enjoyment of the peanut (note the two-fisted eating technique and “mm…” sound in panel 3), thus he tripped over the first of the covering branches and fell headlong into the hole.

    And try to not be so literal. It is a comic.

    And don’t underestimate the complexity of Fleshy’s plans to capture the tree rats.

    To be further pedantic, those are more likely cheese puffs, not peanuts. They look like cheese puffs, and Moondog is unlikely to eat peanuts with the shells on. The cheese puffs might have a little dirt on them, but Moondog is not one to be concerned with rules of any number of seconds. Being cheese puffs, they are more irresistible than peanuts, and Moondog speculated that there might be a much larger supply down the hole. He knew the hole was there, but he tried reaching too far for the cheese puffs and fell for the trap.
