    And just to be fair Obama is also part of this.

    With the fools in Washington now, it should come as no surprise that one of the few rock solid and properly funded government programs would come to be viewed as a source of funding for stupid, unsustainable programs:
    1. Tax cuts and subsidies for the wealthiest Americans.
    2. Paying off the Iraq fiasco.
    3. Not borrowing money at %0.0.
    4. Further sunken costs in a way-too-big military.
    5. Subsidizing corporate tax dodgers.

    Social Security is the right of ALL Americans and it’s been the most important poverty-fighting policy we’ve ever had.

    GWB lived in a dream world where he could lower taxes, hand out prescription drugs and start wars, all revenue-neutral. President Obama lives in the real world. The time for tightening the belt has come, America. So sorry to wake you up, but your house is on fire…

    House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) preemptively rejected President Barack Obama’s upcoming budget proposal Friday, slamming the president’s offer to cut Social Security as “only modest entitlement savings.”

    Obama has suggested “adjustments”, and yes “chained” is a money saver, but picks on the bottom economic scale, again, not the top 1%. Yet, any effort to actually manage a budget, like increasing fees, and yes, TAXES, and eliminate DEDUCTIONS, so that a balance can be reached, won’t pan out.

    btw: “Defense” contractors cost 2.9 TIMES what a full time government employee cost, so there’s huge cost there, and don’t forget that every corporation that PROVIDES a contractor to defense gets an ADDITIONAL cut! Yep,we could cut a lot from “defense”, and NOT affect, “real defense”.

    And directly to SS, it’s secure for the next 20-30 years, but yes, slight adjustments are called for, just not the Republican “privatization” that would gut it, and leave it broke. The “baby boomers” have mostly LOST THEIR PRIVATE PENSIONS, BECAUSE CORPORATIONS STOLE THEM AND SHUT THEM DOWN, but of course that is another matter.

    And banks pay nothing in interest these days so people are forced into the stock market.

    …Obama is part of this at the insistence of the GOP, who told him that they will not consider rational budgeting unless it contains CPI, and were very happy to get it (except for those who accused Obama of attacking seniors, of course).

    @ARodney

    The problem is that he won’t get anything in return and he knows this. I know he’s trying to cut them off at the pass (He’ll cut funding for programs in exchange for a compromise), but eventually they’ll be nothing to cut, and I do belive he’s reached his limit.
