Unfortunately for America, there is substance behind the joke

How dare you smear Obama with such a vicious lie. Do you seriously believe that Senator Obama, who has worked hard for this country, would be in any way associated with Osama Bin Laden? You can question the way he would serve America, but you cannot even begin to build such a heinous case.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO SUBSTANCE behind this baseless accusation. And if there is, you better post it. I won’t hold my breath.

A brief observation on humor for Stewie’s benefit: Good satire must cut close to home, i.e. there must be an element of truth behind the joke to make the intended target squirm a little. The video link leads to an parody of Obama’s imaginary mindless followers. This moldy chestnut is sure to elicit hearty belly laffs from Rush’s, Sean’s and especially the Savage Weiner’s audience, but c’mon, the USSR? Next time, hold up a mirror not of the funhouse variety.

If we’re talking about real anti-Americanism, let’s not forget Sarah Palin’s praise for the Alaska Independence Party, and it wasn’t accidental – her husband was a member for seven years. They want to secede from the US, and the founder was a real fire-breather who managed to get a chance to speak to the UN based on sponsorship from…Iran! So who’s associating with who?

Read it carefully, and it says more about what they left out than it contradicts anything I said. What I said was:

    1. Todd Palin was a member, not Sarah

    2. She did appear on video before the AIP and praised their good work

    3. The founder of the AIP, Joe Vogler, hated the US (“My government is my worst enemy. I’m going to fight them with any means at hand.”), and was going to be sponsored by Iran to speak before the UN (to denounce US “tyranny”) before his untimely death.

The McCain campaign – hardly an unbiased party – denied none of these things. Sarah Palin’s membership is not at issue. Frankly, she’s too much of an ambitious politician to get caught in such an obviously regional trap (like when LBJ turned down an oil well early in his career).

The AIP may profess less radical statements today (though their leader does appear to think her predecessor was assassinated, so you might wonder about her political thinking), but even in the article the chairman still wants to secede, however she softened it.

Sorry - it’s a slick trick, but it doesn’t fly.
