    Have any of you wondered why Putin thought it was a good idea to write that Op-Ed? It’s somewhat unusual for the leader of another nation, especially one like Russia, to give a hoot what the American public thinks or to be concerned about influencing it. It should be noted that Putin solicited the Times to publish his commentary,, not the other way around. Think about it—what you see may NOT be all there is.

    @PAJ

    You’re right; Boenher, McConnell, Cantor, Cruz, Jindal and Limbaugh make the entire country looks like a bunch elementary school dropouts.

    Americans are the most thin skinned, aggressive, excitable, bipolar people on the face of the earth. Problem is we tend to bomb those who excite us.

    A good point. Why would Putin want to write to the American public? Your thoughts, marten?

    @Omnius

    OK, someone with a brain has stolen Omnius’ name and posted something that was not stupid. I know it is not really Omnuis because the words “moron” and “Tea Party” are missing.

    “just tea party morons” is right there and prominent, it is omnius all right.

    Putin lecturing the US on our values is more than a little hypocritical. But, I’m pretty sure Putin has seen this chart:

    He knows the lady can kick him right back to Moscow.

    @lonecat

    Well, it is clear that Putin is not motivated by altruistic motives here. He is pragmatic, and we can expect that his motivation is rooted in pragmatism. One commenter in the Guardian suggested that his model here is Machiavelli, which may be true. His goal is to achieve some particular end that benefits him in his present position. The thing is, i have no idea as to what pressures or constraints he may be feeling from the many sources that affect his actions. The recent mayoral elections in Russia may be having some effect or the potential for disruption from Russian Muslim populations or any one of a number of factors which we have no way of knowing. Sorry for the inconclusiveness of these thoughts, but without better data it is impossible to make a good hypothesis.
