I believe that Francis Perkins, Secretary of Labor under FDR, was the first woman in the cabinet. She later taught at Cornell.

…“I’m curious about something…who was the first President to have a Minority member of the cabinet, and the first to have a Woman on his cabinet?
I bet that most of the Presidential Cabinet members in the last several Hundred years have been old White Guys…”

On this day in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed the first African-American cabinet member, making Robert C. Weaver head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

    …. an’ even earlier -

President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 4, 1933 nominated Frances Perkins of New York to be Secretary of Labor. She was confirmed in this position and became the first woman appointed to a Cabinet position. She was the longest serving Labor secretary, serving for 12 years between 1933 and 1945.
She was also the very first woman ever to enter the Presidential Line of Succession.

Problem for the Republicans is their fake outrage now means they can be held to their own false standards. The vast bulk of women & minorities on Capital Hill are Democrats. Why is that, if conservatives are so concerned about diversity?

The guy asked a good question, that other more intelligent posters answered.

Is there any woman or minority that you’d like to see on Obama’s cabinet? Try to pick someone who might actually be picked by the President & confirmed by the Senate.

Anyone else who wants to chime in is welcome to do so.

WHAT??? You of all, people seem to be complimenting President Obama on even some of his decisions?

This is incredible, I would have thought the Mayans prediction of the end of the world to be more likely!

By the way, congratulations on your seeming recent bout of believability and reasonableness, please keep it up, as it is most needed here!!

Howgozit: The correct commonality is Wall Street – and they are supposed to get us out of the mess Wall Street created.
    .
Tigger: It is traditional for cabinet members to submit their resignations after a presidential election. Also, it is more work than most commenters comprehend and burn-out is understandable.

He wanted Susan Rice and they wouldn’t let him have her. So, are the Repubs at fault as well?

masterskrain-“who was the first President to have a Minority member of the cabinet, and the first to have a Woman on his cabinet?”

    Your ignorant response:

Gee—master professes he doesn’t know—don’t stop masters, you are making progress. Acknowledgement is a big step.

You are pretty much useless here.
