    Why does it take a scandal to fix something that was obviously a problem for several years? It’s kind of obvious when you conduct a couple of trillion dollar wars there is going to be a serious need to upgrade the VA as a result. I don’t have to be a high priced Congress person to figure that out.

    I finally had to use the VA in South Dakota and I’m amazed at the high level of service and competency in Watertown and Sioux Falls. They match any doctor’s office, clinic or hospital that I’ve been to in my 72 years. I think the VA is only as good as the surrounding area’s work ethic.

    I love it when RepubliCons acknowledge — long after the fact — that there’s more to war than killing enemy soldiers.

    All that Congress is doing is throwing money at the problem, not fixing it.

    Walter Reed was scheduled to close that part of the hospital even before the scandal broke. Chances are that’s why there was no rush to fix the place. Not that I’m excusing anyone here: either close it or fix it, but don’t plan to close it sometime in the future and ignore it until then.

    “They” have been saying they were going to fix the VA problem for decades. Mr. Truman is quoted as saying that he would fix it as soon as he could, but it wouldn’t be immediately. And that was….how long ago?

    Not honoring pledges to veterans is a tradition that goes back to the 18th century. Maybe we will finally learn.

    Probably not.

    This is the system that proponents of single payer health care want to force every American to use.

    The VA, even with its faults, has long treated troops, and vets, FAR BETTER than the Pentagon. It is the PENTAGON that’s responsible for those screwed up or destroyed records that keep VA from processing people in a timely manner. BTW, my son was denied “combat related” by the Navy to keep him from getting both his EARNED Navy pension plus his full VA component for disabilities (multiple). He just showed me the Navy’s denial decision on his combat related,, and it states right in their document of DENIAL, that his disabilities ARE COMBAT RELATED!! The Pentagon denied him anyway! Then THEY “lost” his appeal for a few days (very short time frame veterans have to respond) and denied him AGAIN! The VA has been there to help, and MY VA experience has been 90+ positive since 95. (I got out in 69, but took years to file for disability.)

    @Ted Lind

    After reading the comments thread, I think the answer to your first question is: No problem can be solved until one side proves the other side is to blame.

    That is sad. Obama is the one who put us $18,000,000,000 in debt! He is the one responsible for all these homeless Veterans. Go to war, witness horror, and then come back and not get what was promised to you. You don’t have to be a soldier to understand that.
