As editorial cartoonist for The Journal News in New York, Davies cuts to the chase on every major issue, deftly penetrating the spin and obfuscation to show readers what’s really at the heart. His caustic wit combines with a strong moral sensibility to render the complex comprehensible.

Yes it does create jobs. Unfortunately, jobs like being in the military being forced to invade other peoples homes who had nothing to do with the events of 11 Sept 2001, jobs like “homeland security”, jobs like spying on we the people, and jobs in the industries that supply the military with inferior and dangerous hardward at inflated prices.

Maybe, someday, an actual job creator will appear on stage with Mitt.

BTW, how come Bush and Cheney never appear at any Romney event? They have the same advisors, they must have the same philosophy.

Well, Darth Cheney endorsed him the other day…

I would like to hear about this discontinuity. All those on the right say the government has no role in the economy – and that job creation is the function of the corporations, which is why they pay less in taxes today (as a percentage of income) that at any time in the last 60 years. If it’s not the government’s job to create jobs, then that can’t be a plank for the presidential election. If it IS the government’s job, then the government needs more control over those who send jobs away.

Hello Neighbors,
Strictly speaking, Government is responsible for infrastructure, regulation, and law enforcement in those places where it crosses state lines to maintain a continuity in services. As in forcing fire departments to use the same size hoses and fire plugs in the event fire trucks from one state/region are needed in another. A fire in NYC caused that standardization. The interstate system was built so military equipment and supplies could be more quickly driven from one coast to another in the event of war. WW2 inspired that network of roads. Government is also supposed to protect us from companies contaminating food, water, and air in the name of profits as well as to protect employees from companies who would put lives at risk in the name of profits as Massey Mines did to those 29 coal workers. It would be nice if the Federal Goverment could sit quietly in DC and do their job, but until States and private businesses do THEIR jobs with honor, integrity, and compassion, the federal government will have a right to interfere—now if only they would interfere with honor, integrity, and compassion. I hate politics, but I love my country and, I care for and respect my neighbors.
Respectfully,
C.

The problem is “jobs” to a lib is food stamps, underemployment extensions, government jobs, bought car union jobs, and more tax fed federalism jobs. Those most of those"jobs" are doing just fine. Food stamps for example are up in record numbers. And Obama has been out there making sure everyone knows that 8% is the new 5% and that we should not panic and this is the new reality and we can only expect more under him.

Government does not create WEALTH. You get wealth by turning a profit! Government does not and should not turn a profit.

C Downs well delineated government responsibility, but I would like to add one more responsibility. Government is responsible for creating conditions under which private enterprise can prosper. Without that prosperity government cannot collect the taxes (you can’t collect something from nothing) that make it possible for the government to perform the functions that C Downs defines.

But but but according to Obama Money is “spent” on tax cuts. If they had not collected the money then how can Obama claim to have spent it? That should be the riddle of the day.

Almost forgot, Obama’s magic green jobs! Those where to save us! Obama even put a Communist Green Job Czar on the payrole to make that happen. Obama even put a billion or so tax money into projects W rejected in order to pay off..er um..create magic green jobs! Now is that the kind of “responsible for infrastructure” we are hoping for?

Well said. Government doesn’t help jobs so much as hinder them.
