Hey they’re trying to destroy the president for the ‘social welfare’.

Actually, it wasn’t “just a questionnaire”.
[]
For example, the Tea Party branch out of Waco (Texas) was told to:
[]
1. Turn over a list of everyone who donated to them over a certain period.
[]
2. Produce a list indicating the topic and guests for every last episode of every last radio show they hosted over the past two years.
[]
The first is a major invasion of privacy, and the latter is a snipe hunt for any organization that wasn’t keeping tabs since day one.

Matt, I’ve never been a fan of the tea party. But doing the wrong thing to a group you don’t like is still doing the wrong thing. If it had happened to both conservative and liberal groups I would shrug and say “meh”. But the IRS came out and said it was wrong. They f’ed up, they know it, there will be an investigation, and I hope responsibility will be taken by the appropriate people.

OK, the IRS screwed up in targeting primarily (so it seems at the present) tea party and similar conservative groups. But we’ve heard virtually nothing about what, if anything, those investigations have discovered about the legitimacy of their claiming tax-exempt status. Was this really a fruitless witchhunt, or did the IRS find that some of these groups were falsely filing for 501©(4) tax-exempt status?

From what I’ve seen, a best-case scenario is that someone was ham-handedly attempting to enforce the regulations, while a worst-case scenario is that someone with a political axe to grind specifically targeted certain organizations.
[]
However, given that a religious group was specifically asked if they had ever picketed Planned Parenthood, I’m leaning more towards the latter being the case.
[]
Either way, no evidence has surfaced to suggest that the additional scrutiny actually caught anyone falsely seeking protection.

Nice redirection, but the real scandal is the huge amounts spent on buying elections, courtesy of the Citizens United Supreme Snort decision. 24hour,seven days a week the Republican smear machines are fabricating! Even against their own party, Rov and company, are ripping up Republican moderates. The republican party has become a farce of itself

Get rid of the 501 tax exemption altogether for political entities.

I think I entered the wrong room. Sounds like applicants for ‘political indoctrination camps’. Slowly, very slowly, he leaves ….

How should the IRS go about finding out if an organization applying for tax favored status is a political organization?
singlespeed said, 2 days ago
Where was the GOP outrage when the Bush led IRS was targeting black churches, the NAACP, Greenpeace, PETA and other “liberal” non-profits for IRS scrutiny and audits? The tea party folks weren’t even audited and most were given their “tax free” certificates after a few delays. If you’re applying for tax-exempt status you should expect a little extra due diligence and scrutiny by the IRS.
This isn’t so much a scandal as it is an attempt to make it a scandal because the GOP can’t find anything else to do. At least they voted to repeal Obamacare for the 37th time and voted to extend the helium supply.

@singlespeed
The helium supply is important! It keeps costs for blimps and zeppelins down!

If I had my way… Good Lord, are you people lucky to not have me as Tyrant! These TEA party guys, they are scum! They claim to be patriots, but they want to destroy any kind of government by withholding taxes. Therefor they want to destroy the United States of America Therefor they are terrorists, and if I had my way… But I’m repeating myself :-)

Again, caricature. Whether the people depicted directly, or those depicted by having their views depicted are to be insulted, or enlightened if they so desire, is entirely up to the person enjoying the gift of the artist. It is enjoyably hilarious from either side, really.

Helium has industrial uses, and the government’s recent attempts to liquidate it drove prices so artificially low that the market couldn’t correct itself when the supply finally began to contract. The end result is that we’re actually now facing regional helium shortages.
