I used to watch my brother play games. I just wasn’t interested in trying, but I found some of them fascinating to look at- like an alternate form of TV watching.

Those are cartoon joysticks. They’re drawn that way to make them instantly recognizable. This is a problem for cartoonists: technology changes so fast that whatever you draw will become dated quickly. And the changes seem to be streamlining more and more devices into a similar appearance. Many portable devices are now little rectangular objects. An old fashioned telephone LOOKS like a telephone when you draw it. A cell phone looks like a pack of cards, or an iPod, or a number of other things. I admit that several times John wrote that one of the characters was using an iPad and I changed it to a laptop for one reason only: it’s easier to recognize it for what it is.

Back when Atari was big, i invited my wife, (then girlfriend) to play with the above mentioned item, she did not accept my offer, but took pity on me and married me anyway, 24 years and 4 days ago.
