    We didn’t have an entitlement called an allowance; any money our parents gave us was quid pro quo. So as soon as we were old enough, my brother and I got paper routes to earn spending money.

    Reminds me of a grade school English textbook, in which the author presents a simplified version of English= pharmacy becomes farmasi, ocean is oshen, double letrs r removd and ed is replacd with d-by the time the article ends it is unreadable!
