By John Zakour (writer) & Scott Roberts (artist)
Maria is a kid who sees things her own way- and expects the world to see it her own way too! Her friend Joey is more practical. He helps keep her grounded, though that’s as easy as handling a Thanksgiving balloon in a hurricane. Sue is special and she knows it- better than anyone. She’s writing her autobiography now, but she’ll live it later. Bob takes things slower. Ms. Payne is their teacher- she enjoys her job, she truly does. She’d enjoy it even more without the students.

Man is not a rational animal, he is a rationalizing animal. I believe that was Freud but I could be mistaken….

It’s a parent’s job to lovingly raise children into responsible, productive adults… doesn’t mean that parents should allow kids to do everything they want. Good for Maria’s mom!

Society today seems to try to teach parents to be afraid of their children- afraid of their disapproval. Maybe the constant drumbeat message of the entertainment media- that children are so much smarter than their parents- is convincing adults as well as kids. Time to dial it back a bit.

There’s unconditional love, but there’s also tough love. It also must be applied if you want your kids to make it in life as they age. They will thank you for it later.

But they’ll kick, scream and curse you now. Be brave.

Maria is making a common mistake. Her parents love her but not to indulge her. A difference she may one day find out.

And everyone wants to be their child’s “buddy”. Makes me wince whenever I hear a parent say, “No, buddy, you shouldn’t do that”. To me, it sounds like a mixed message.

Maria, Maria, Maria . . . of course, you are only what? Six? Eight? So, let me explain the devilish little details of unconditional love. Part of that love requires raising your children well, of not letting them out of their obligations and duty, of inculcating a sense of duty, ethics and consideration for others.
