Used to be Catholics were supposed to eat fish on every Friday in honor of St. Peter. That was changed in the ’60’s, as I recall. The lenten restriction on meat refers to land animals/mammals. Fish is required for the same reason as it used to be.

One of the wonders of the world: why isn’t fish considered meat? I agree with prfessor though. It’s more of a given that “don’t eat meat during lent” refers to beef, pork, chicken…land mammals.
