Twila may just need ways to visualize what the numbers mean to make fractions more meaningful and therefore more interesting. Useful items can be felt board circles and squares with fractional pieces to fit in, graph paper, measuring cups for cooking, coins, etc.

Golly, Rufus! Can you really just shrug off all that has happened, all your new friends?

What was that? …anyone else hear that? I think… it was the sound of a large shoe… about to be dropped from a great height.

That would have been (is?) a great concluding line…Right up there with “‘Well, I’m back’, he said.” or “All was well.”

Maybe I’m over thinking, because of Twila’s memory being manipulated, but the doodle on the lower left hand corner of her binder looks like a floating taken child.

I doubt very much that Rufus is just shrugging it off. And short of having his memory wiped, how could he ever forget such a searing experience? But the only ones with whom he could share it are those who have also been through it. And that rules out his family, classmates, or other acquaintances. So Rufe is simply easing back into life as it had been before all the terror and turmoil.

    For now.

When I saw it,. I thought Rafer Frost instead of a child.

I tend to do that too, trying to read meanings into things where perhaps none exist. On the other hand, this is LSoS, where some small detail might be important, but you only recognize its significance in retrospect. But I just took a closer look at the doodle in question, and noticed something even more interesting. I won’t swear to it, because even with enlargement it’s not very clear, but it almost looks as if ‘Hint’ is written there with an arrow below it, pointing at the floating child…

Merritt, are you messing with us again?!
