Margo: “Rufus, grab the spider leg. If we do find Goatsucker, she may be hungry and want something to eat.”

Things are not looking up for Rufus at the moment. Lucius may be a skilled tracker (among other things), but he isn’t really big on diplomacy….

Poor Rufe… this is so sad.

So now, the WBG is delivering Goatsucker to Slynderfell. Flimm has badly misjudged the situation – he thinks she was alone; but her caring ‘family’ is about to arrive…

If only they had arrived sooner..
Murder your darlings, indeed, Mr. Merritt :(

Just found a very interesting little essay on “kill/murder your darlings” by Wendy Palmer:

Writing rules, misapplied: kill your darlings

    I especially appreciate the following:

“However, I do not agree with the generalisation/over-use of this advice: that you should cut things just because you like them – stupidity! If you cut the things you like, you’ll cut the things your audience will like … If I cut everything just because I liked it, I’d have nothing left, not even the sad bits where characters die because I like those bits too.”

Though I have not (yet) read any of Ms. Palmer’s stories, I suspect that I may have just discovered another favorite writer.

Sometimes for the story to move along a character must die. A serious poignant death, not the dispatch of replaceable lackeys who die by the score.

I’m reading one on the Internet told after the fact. And we know one character is going to die. It is harder as time goes on since we know who and we see her and loving her more and more as it progresses to the inevitable end.

I hope that when Korry Merritt publishes he can make sure to have those blood stains are visible. (Since the color artist here obviously did not put them in.)

Margo to the boys: “I . . . I hope you guys are ready for anything.”

Biff: “Don’t mind Rufus. He just realized he forgot his binoculars, and a handgun. And he’s trying to remember what else he lost.”

Here’s what puzzles me: how could Flimm not have been aware — given that he can see beyond his lair, as he had pointed out to Slynderfell — that Goatsucker had been one of the “run-of-the-mill rabble-rousers,” as he had characterized our gang? After all, Flimm had been very concerned that Goatsucker would tell others — i.e. our gang — once Heckbender revealed Flimm’s location. It sounds as if Flimm had assumed that once Goatsucker was eliminated, there would no longer be any cause for worry, because our gang would be left without a clue. It appears that he did not anticipate that they would find and follow the blood trail. But now that they have, it’s only a matter of time before Flimm realizes it. And that can only mean another bout of harrowing, hair-raising action to come…

Actually, I would say that it was Slynderfell and Flimm who have been shortsighted. Remember, the former had ordered a hit on Goatsucker only; Blyme is probably not (yet) aware that there are those who are searching for her. But I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he has another job waiting for him once he and his gang make their delivery…

I think Kreelit may have foreshadowed that when he said (about the assassins) “sometimes they get the job done a bit too well.” They weren’t supposed to leave a fresh blood trail practically to Flimm’s door. And Flimm probably didn’t expect the rest of our rabble-rousers to be so close behind Goatsucker either.
