JFri: I think you’ve got it backwards. the possessive form is its. The correct meaning of it’s is that it’s a contraction for it is or it has. There are some good on-line dictionaries available.

Pin the apostrophe on the contraction. I think the apostrophe just looks backwards because of the point of view.

I always see an apostrophe as representing something missing, ie “i’ or “ha” when used with it. A possessive holds “s” next to it.. Is that too childish? Well, I am reading comics, aren’t I?
