Despite the understandable angst of the conservative commentators above, Ms. Benson fails to show the elephant standing on the other side of the stage waiting impatiently for their dance with Ms. Hippo(crasy). While I agree D’s are terrible about giving the debt the attention it deserves, R’s have historically campaigned against big government before getting into power and creating their own increases to the gov’t spending. Usually in the form of military contracts and gov’t funded projects to the home districts of those who have been friendly to R social issues. If you want to see real reductions in gov’t spending before attacking all of the thorny issues with which our legislators play dodge ball – medicare, social security, et al – put more inspectors, auditors, accountants, efficiency experts, etc. into the field and give them the tools to force regulations and guidelines to be enforced vigorously. Making companies who are extracting minerals and gas from public lands pay the same price they would have to pay if they were mining private lands would also be useful. I still support a .0001% tax on stock trades, especially where hyper trading is concerned. While it is a negligible tax over all, it would provide a great deal of income and reduce the volatility we see in markets. It was ALWAYS about Tax and Spend (add Free Stuff)…..The Dem Lib Platform. …Prove it!!! OK!!!!…..Taxes are going up, Spending has been going up and increasing in rate of increase.
Mix a snifter of Bill Mauldin, a dash of Jeff McNelly and a very large dollop of common sense, and you begin to get an idea of Lisa Benson’s considerable talent.
