Darn. The gray bar on the right is not part of the image.

I thought you wrote “gay bar” and I thought “I should hope not!”

I suppose millions of television viewers saw my husband [Illinois U.S. Sen. Everett Dirksen] at that 1952 National Convention, when he pointed his finger directly at Tom Dewey and said, “We supported you in 1944 and 1948 . . . We followed you before and you took us down the road to defeat!”
This really brought the GOP convention to its feet, both booing and cheering.
The convention became so noisy that the acting chairman had to rap for order. Everett drew a big laugh when he said, “I assure you that I didn’t mean to create a controversy.”
Gov. Dewey sat there frozen-faced, sipping from a soft drink bottle. And he delivered his big New York delegation to Eisenhower.

Can anybody remember Truman’s impression of H.B. Kaltenborn after the polls came in for HST? Classic!
Dewey always reminded me of an old comic actor Billy De Wolfe…He was like Nixon with his 4:00 shadow.
