Heavy bags with heavy hearts. (Actually, they are filled with not-so-glad rags and balled-up pages of newsprint.) In session, they describe the combinations that have knocked them for a loop. They dream of the duck-and-cover, the rope-a-dope, the counterpunch. But they’re beginning to understand that they were created to stand there and take it.

No, group — don’t be so quick to dismiss Jerry’s experience. He’s made himself vulnerable and we all need to respect him.
Yes, Jerry, it “counts” if you were never actually punched. Being forced to portray “the husband” for little Madysin Dakotah was objectification and abuse. You were living in a PlayskoolSuperFunAwesomeHouse of Horror. But this is a safe place, and you’ve made it here. Let’s sit with that for a moment, okay?

Dr. Quilty has the same recommendation for all of his clients: Get yourself a punching bag so you can safely release your repressed anger. Given this habit of his, one might suppose he would have had the good sense not to assign these particular patients to group therapy. But somehow the potential risks never entered his mind.

" somehow, uncontrollably – every time he’d knock me down – I’d come popping up for more—-"
