You forget that it’s corporate greed that made unions necessary in the first place and corporate greed that has been moving jobs overseas.

“You forget that it’s corporate greed that made unions necessary in the first place and corporate greed that has been moving jobs overseas.”

You are correct in that corporate greed necessitated the working man establishing unions, but it has been corporate survival that has forced jobs overseas.

When the UAW is demanding that a high school graduate with no particular skills doing a repetitive and simple assembly job get paid $70 + an hour and get benefits it is they who have priced their labor out of the market.
When dues are more important to the union than growing their workers in skills and value and when the union is more interested in taking worker money and giving it to politicians to whom those workers object, the union is doomed.

My wife does payroll for a company that has to use union workers because of a clause in the government contract they have and will you may be right about the take-home pay being at the amounts you stated she also has to cut a check to the unions for about 3/4 the amount of the employees pay for ‘Dues’. so copy and pasting what the unions want you to believe “just promotes laziness and dependency” on the unions. I also lost two jobs thanks to the unions making it unprofitable for the business to stay in operation.

You lie. It’s management that makes $70+ per hour, not union workers.

I research and buy products made in the USA – you as the consumer will determine if a job is sent overseas. Yes it is true that I can’t go to Sears, Target or most stores and buy off the shelf – but with the Internet I buy all of my clothes made in the USA including shoes. Tools, linens… I research and purchase. If enough people bought Made in the USA there would be more jobs and less unemployment! Unions are so far out of touch I don’t even buy items if I believe they are union made!

The exact rate of pay is not the issue but rather that they are overpaid for what they do.
And yes Adrian, I could do that assembly work. I spent my weekend doing a side job for a friend that needed some last minute commercial electrical and comm work done. I can run cable, conduit, and such at the top of a ladder, flex and contort to get at boxes etc., and I’m old.
Truth is that somebody with a high school diploma that is doing repetitive assembly work with little or no need to do anything beyond put the parts together is not highly skilled labor. That is a rote learned job.

“Quite the contrary, we should be charging those very companies for the privilege of doing business here.”
I almost hate to say it, but it may be time to entertain this idea.
When my wife and I were stationed overseas I looked into purchasing a vehicle in Madrid, Spain and their import tax was (at the time) about 50% of the vehicle’s value (Japanese), I ended up buying a used local one. The excessive import tax gave me an incentive to purchase locally. Perhaps it’s time we entertain that thought, and help America buy American.
As for Unions, the sad part is I personally believe they are desperately needed but have failed to evolve. Instead of focusing on their mission, they focused on greed and got lazy. Shame.

Forget the unions, later with the past… let’s bring the jobs back here, get the illegals to pay taxes and educate the next generation before we are seeking help from Mexico.
