What is it about Benghazi, again? So far, all I see are Republicans turning the deaths of four Americans into political theater. The “Talking Points” thing isn’t much of a scandal. Susan Rice made it clear to all but the most oblivious that the information on hand was incredibly incomplete. We have evidence that the attackers were motivated by the Youtube Video. The part about the attack growing out of a protest turned out to be wrong. Again, I’m not sure why that is a scandal. The “Stand Down Order” controversy has been thoroughly debunked. Early on, I made satirical references to “Blackhawk Down” & the idea that sending more forces into a situation you don’t understand, is often more likely to wind up increasing your losses. Turns out, we really didn’t have the option. The few people who complained that they weren’t allowed to fly to Benghazi wouldn’t have arrived in time. And, if there were a follow up attack planned in Tripoli, they would have been in the wrong place. Reinforcements were quickly sent to places that were deemed at risk.Benghazi was not an official diplomatic outpost, let alone an embassy. Stevens knew it wasn’t the safest place, but went anyway. He did ask for beefed up security, but turned down an offer of a Marine contingent. We’ve gone over the fact that the State Department’s security budget had been deeply cut by the Republicans in Congress. The bureaucracy should have been more responsive, but Steven’s could have pushed harder or stayed away from Benghazi. The man decided to take a risk & he miscalculated. It’s a tragedy, not a scandal. Hopefully, this improves the system, but there will always be dangerous places where our diplomats will choose to go, knowing they are at risk. Far worse happened under Reagan without the political circus. Most people have tuned out the right wing media’s ongoing Benghazi fixation. Maybe something explosive turns up, but I’m skeptical about that. At this point, they’re looking as crazy as the lady who threw the first shoe at Hillary.
