Best guess, the government will really hit the debt ceiling sometime before summer ‘14. When, exactly, no one has a clue. Nor does anyone know what would really happen if the Tea party doesn’t chicken out again and Congress really lets the deficit hit the ceiling.

Best guess: Nothing good. The Treasury computers do not have the software to comply with a breach of the debt ceiling limit.

Basically, Congress votes that it’s the Law of the Land that the government MUST spend $1, and also votes that it’s the Law of the Land that the government cannot spend that $1, and the US is a nation of Laws, not men, so it has never broken the Law, and has no idea what happens when the law has an internal contradiction. Drones, perhaps? Yes, drone that contradiction away!

“Unfortunately, you have moronic twits like Nancy Pelosi that say there is nothing to cut.”

If Pelosi honestly said there’s nothing in the budget to cut, she’s totally wrong. We can start with that over bloated military budget.

Let’s start with bloated useless social engineering programs and handouts to the undeserving first!

Actually you describe much of the military spending with that statement.

You don’t need to “guess,” Michael. Just listen to actual economists, do the math, and look at the budget that the GOP helped pass. Jack Lew has done the math, and the ceiling needs to be raised by mid February. If you aren’t going to eliminate all social programs, and you aren’t going to raise a single tax or close one loophole, then yes, you need to raise the debt ceiling. And any congressman who voted for the budget and votes against the debt ceiling raise needs to be called out for their hypocrisy.

Of course, Nancy Pelosi never said anything of the kind.

Yeah in February was supposed to last till march. I hope the GOP makes this issue month after month after month right up till the next election.

what should be cut, we already have three aircraft carriers setting in port doing nothing. We cut back the Navy and Air Force. We have cut back despite the increase in dollars those dollars do not buy as much as it used to. The military is having trouble housing our and I mean our soldiers.

Go back dems and see what Obama had to say bout increasing the debt ceiling when he was a do nothing senator.
Why did the democrats turn off the debt clock?
Could it be that it was to easy to see that they have spent nearly as much in 5 years as was spent in the previous 8 and are on track to double debt in Obamas two terms. They will have increased the debt by as much as all previous administrations did before this one combined. In other words the debt was $10 trillion in 2009.When Obama gets out of office, the debt will be $20 trillion.

The obvious solution is to raise the ceiling before your head hits it.

We are all idiots. Why do we even HAVE a “debt ceiling” if once established we do all in our power to spend until it needs to go up AGAIN?

Stop and THINK for a change.

If you open credit with Sears, what do they check about you? Your ability to repay your debt. Your consistence in repayment of previous debt. The number of times you were not able to pay past 30/60/90 days and so on.

Once that is established, they decide your DEBT LIMIT" and your interest rate.

Can it be raised? Sure. BUT one must obtain higher standards to qualify.

Yes, credit is easy in this country.

So then, the government has already borrowed 17+ trillion dollars from our children’s future earnings. Has the government displayed an ability and willingness to “repay” that debt? nope.

Just like the immature child with their first credit card, they go out and spend until it is maxed out buying things the “want” but do not necessarily need.

The debt limit was raised so that the government can continue to fund pork barrel projects. In reality, the receipts every year are adequate to fund the “mandatory” spending.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_United_States_federal_budget

In the above example the income is 2.9 trillion and MANDATORY expenses are 2.5 trillion.

No cuts, no defaults no muss no fuss.

We have immature children running the country.
