This may appear funny but a true alcoholic usually does not display any of the classic Showtime characteristics. I know for I still stay hidden from view.

    SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED

The medical journal read all the Fleming James Bond novels and counted his alcohol intake. He drank a lot of Martinis. A serious Martini drinker would scream if his Martini were shaken, because that bruises the gin.

In most drinks, the bartender measures out the liquor and pours it into a large glass. The customer can ask for water, soda, ice, juice, etc. to top up the glass, but the alcohol is precisely measured.

A Martini glass is served filled to the brim. Sizes vary, but the usual is about 4.6 ounces. A Gleason Martini had the bartender pour a capful of vermouth into the glass, then pour it out. The gin was poured over commercial ice, 0º, then immediately poured into the glass, so about 4 ounces of pure gin (after subtracting for the olive). When asked if he wanted a twist of lemon, Gleason said, ‘If I wanted a lemonade, I’d have asked for one.’ Best guess, he didn’t want any space for gin wasted with lemon peel.

By shaking the Martini, a lot of the ice melts, and the glass is half full of melted ice, not gin, so the number of Bond’s alcohol units was really about half what the BMJ calculated.

Just read one of his stories. He starts out on “vacation” but he is really recovering from some nasty stuff from the last mission. He is totally sober during those few months but craving. Back on mission, grabbing a drink every chance he could, drinking every other day or even every day, but never to drunk. Never to a compromising his senses.
So from what I have read, he could become a drunk if it was not for his disciple.

And while the banter is pleasant (even more so to see it ’mongst some of the more vehement locals), I agree… and wonder what prompted Holbert to ink it. His whim of iron?

My motto is I only drink when I’m with someone, or when I’m alone.

Yes. And from Paul Hornung – When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.
