It’s a tea party cartoon, so cruel and clueless is key to the philosophy. Attack the victims, and complain about spending money to do what’s right. And, of course, the very premise of the cartoon — that taxpayer funds will cover the injuries — is also false: see the NYT article on the Boston fund today. $50,000 will not cover the costs of prosthetics. If we were a civilized country with single-payer health care, these people would be taken care of. At least under Romneycare they’re likely to be insured, but it’s private insurance with solid limits about what will be covered. Many of the victims will be ruined financially, and probably bring their families down with them as housing and college educations go to pay for needed health care.
