The “MOM” tattoo is a nice touch.

    The toon is sadly true.

Jeff, like many of we vets, knows the costs, in more than mere dollars. Long call from my son tonight, “W” and Cheney’s entanglements are back at him again, and it ain’t easy.

The costs of the wars do not, of course, include the cost of care for veterans that are wounded or mutilated, the cost of care for veterans that are mentally screwed up, and the cost of veterans who don’t get treatment for any of those conditions.
    -
Of course, Haliburton, Blackwater, and many other corporations/people make tons of money, so I guess it all comes out even.

You’re barely scratching the surface, braindead08. Veterans with PTSD, alcohol or drug problems or are violent or homeless are also a drain on society. So are their fatherless children. Then there’s the opportunity cost; although many vets go on to have good careers as civilians because of their military experience (and many of those would have been successful as civilians anyway), others are damaged such that they can never settle down into a productive life.

There’s the distraction of war: raw materials, labour and capital that would have been invested in something else. Although the arms industry get fantastically rich, nobody else does.

Then there’s the psychological damage done nationally of seeing the body bags coming home.

But this is only investment in the future. Every time a foreign widow or orphan or grieving parent is created, there is the risk of another brother, uncle or cousin taking up arms to get revenge, guaranteeing another generation of income for the war industry.

This butcher’s bill won’t stop until the fighting stops, and you can’t create peace with airstrikes and drones.

Uncle Sam: First, slap that whispering instigator a good one.
Then, since the 1% profited greatly from all these wars and de-regulation and raping the middle class, slap a good sur-tax on those profits, and “deferred income” to pay this tab, then strip away the citizenship of those who stash all the loot in off-shore, tax-free havens!

^Nixon ran in longer, too keep up the profits for his friends, and left it for Jerry Ford to end.

“Do agree with LBJ escalating and sending more troops to Vietnam without funding? LBJ was a Democrat who Loved The Vietnam War.”
    -
The whole ’It’s Okay If A Republican Does It.’
does not apply to Democrats. LBJ was hounded into not running again and here’s a hint: The hounding was not done by conservatives.
    -
For today’s “conservatives”, i.e. Republicans/Fox “news” viewers, LBJ’s escalation of Viet Nam totally justifies the Iraqi invasion.
    -
You know, It’s Okay If A Republican Does It.

Yeah, Obama made the neocons invade Iraq before he was even in the Senate…
