Too small to be a country, too big to be an asylum.

Having grown up in SC, i can only paraphrase an unknown humourist (well, unknown to me.):

    I’m from South Carolina.

    Great place to be from.

    Far from.

Hump, I say the same thing about Oklahoma.

I live in north Alabama now and this is not the south depicted in the media. We have more engineers and PhDs per capita than any city in the country. Go figure.

I’m a South Carolina native and my greatest dream is to be far, far from it. This cartoon isn’t political satire; it’s a documentary.

I’m surprised people hate SC so much. My grandparents spent every winter in Myrtle Beach since they retired and they loved it. They had lots of friends there and when my grandfather died, his pastor flew to Canada on his own dime to handle the funeral for free.

Let’s face it, South Carolina didn’t need Wilson shooting his mouth off on top of the Mark Sanford farce.

I’ve only ever been through South Carolina and don’t know much about it. I’m sure it’s filled with lots of good people as well as bad people, smart people and stupid people (just like all the other states).

That said, historically speaking, SC has been a somewhat more cantankerous state than many others. (John C. Calhoun, anyone? Civil War, anyone?)

It’s probably best to remember that Danziger’s representation here is meant to be a satirical portrayal to point out stark contrasts and not meant to accuse all South Carolinians of being such morons.

To all, I guess I should have mentioned I read the term in Kathleen Parker’s column a day or two ago and she used it not as an origional thought. Had spent some time there with my Dad in the Navy and going through with duty. But that was years ago and I thought some things had changed a bit, they haven’t.

tpenna is right, of course; I lived there for a few years, and there have been a few good folks even in the Congress (I liked Fritz Hollings, who I even met once when he was running for national office). I’ve vacationed more than once at Hilton Head and Myrtle beach – both of which are tourist zones so not typical. And then there are places deep in the swamp…

And that’s the way it is- from before the Civil War to the present. The saying “too small for a nation, too large for an insane asylum” comes from a wag who stated this before the war broke out.

Another bigoted cartoon by Danziger; he hates stupid poor folks that aren’t as sophisticated as he thinks he is himself. I get the impression here that he thinks everybody in SC are just a bunch of hillbillies. But as striper brings out very well above, Danziger doesn’t keep up w/ current events very well, so he’s the one lacking sophistication.
