He doesn’t know how to play chess, but he does know the goal of the game is to put the other guy’s king in checkmate. And Ralston wasn’t paying near enough attention to see him cheat.

I did that once. A friend wanted to play chess while I was eating dinner and paying attention to other people. He thought carefully about his moves. I made my moves rather absent-mindedly. I won. I don’t know how, either.
