State schools are great if you can afford tuition – because the big scholarships aren’t there. We found it much cheaper to send our son to a private university because they helped a lot whereas the state school wouldn’t help at all.

    Is that your problem?

Get your butt off your wallet and be serious! Your kid deserves the best education possible, and there is aid all over the place. Between my BS in Physics from Harvard, my MS in electrical engineering from MIT and my PHD in Computer Science from UC Berkley, I only paid for living expenses. Various grants and DARPA paid my way.

All the grants mostly come from the private schools, but state colleges and universities can often get you some excellent external grants, IF YOUR GPA IS HIGH ENOUGH AND YOU ARE WELL PUBLISHED.

University should not be for just the brilliant, but it should also be easily available to the SLIGHTLY above average but hard working student.

Um, if you know of any part-time jobs that pay $30,000 a year, so my grandkids work and still find time to attend class and study, please send me a list.

True. Unfortunately, a lot of the available slots are filled with dullards who can’t do the work, but are propped up because they belong to certain “deprived” demographic groups.
