It all started when Phoebe skipped a rock across a pond and accidentally hit a unicorn in the face. Improbably, this led to Phoebe being granted one wish, and using it to make the unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, her obligational best friend. But can a vain mythical beast and a nine-year-old daydreamer really forge a connection?

Can Marigold walk down stairs?
(Real horses can’t .. .they can go up stairs, but not down. That’s why firehouses used to have circular stairs, otherwise the horses would climb up … but couldn’t come down.

I actually didn’t know that.
Hm. It’s an interesting question.

My cat goes both up and down ladders. This morning she spent a while near the top of the ladder that goes to the roof, sunning herself. When done, she just walked back down it. I’ve only seen one other cat do that.

I’ve an old photo of the fuzzball sunning from some years back.

I think horses are probably physically capable of going down stairs, but don’t know it.

Whoa, I’d love to see her on a half-pipe.

Sure they can! As long as they’re not steep and narrow. I used to ride my first horse up and down the steps of the church.

When I was a teenager, our barn cat had kittens in the woodshed loft. They lived up there until they learned to climb down the ladder. My dad left the big ladder up against the house (big old farmhouse with 10 foot ceilings) and we woke up to find Oscar and Ginger peeking in the bedroom windows.
One of our current barncats goes up and down the ladder into the garage loft all the time.

: D Superb illustrations today, Dana! I just knew Marigold was gonna rock those roller skates! (And… if I were Phoebe, I’d really want to ride her while she did that.)

Having four legs makes for greater stability. When walking an equine always has three feet on the ground which is a stable tripod. Humans must always be working to remain upright, even when not moving, while a horse can actually sleep standing up.The bipedal gate with its inherent instability also has much greater agility. If Phoebe could roller skate they could learn to use their individual advantages in a complimentary manor. If Phoebe learned a some gymnastic vaulting techniques, they could put on quite a show.

I’d think her psychokinesis would aid Marigold in going down stairs.
