It all started when Phoebe skipped a rock across a pond and accidentally hit a unicorn in the face. Improbably, this led to Phoebe being granted one wish, and using it to make the unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, her obligational best friend. But can a vain mythical beast and a nine-year-old daydreamer really forge a connection?

Phoebe doesn’t need to read the minds of a unicorn:
“me…me…me…me…me…me…me…I’m so pretty… me…me…me…”

Marigold must be very forgetful if she forgot what she was thinking by the time she read her own mind!

Silly unicorn, there is nothing magical about the ability to read your own thoughts.
Horses can become quite proficient in reading human thoughts. One’s body reacts to your thoughts and emotions in expressions and mannerisms that horses learn to read. A highly trained and disciplined monk might be able to fool a horse, but few ordinary people can. When riding, a horse can read your body reactions even better through direct physical contact. I would expect a unicorn with the aid of magic to be able to do at least as well.

I really did LOL.

Riding effectively requires some mental discipline. If you are nervous or scared the horse will become nervous or scared. If you are confident and calm the horse will become confident and calm.

Marigold is one cheeky unicorn. (Or is that a common trait of the species?) Trying to save her faux pau from her young charge.
