So true! And things usually seem to go a lot smoother, faster, generally more joyful and fun, when one goes in as undemanding and as grateful as possible. Instead of the host having to feel the burden of “putting on airs” and trying to make everything so elaborate for the sake of some pretentious comfort, things go a lot better when EVERYBODY can feel comfortable, including the host.

That goes for short-term guests, as well as long term. When we don’t go demanding things, we can always expect the bonus, unexpected surprise, and it will be even better than we could ever dream. Of course the Bible said it best: "….more happiness in giving than receiving.’ (Acts 20:35)

And yet, for those folks not wanting to take charity, because it is better to give than to receive—just think: If no one wanted to receive, who would you give it to? So someone has to receive as well. If you need help, don’t be ashamed to accept it. A win-win all around.

I used the attitude when traveling in foreign countries “I am a guest in your country, it is my responsibility to treat you with the respect I would expect to be treated by you in mine. Try to learn a few phrases in the foreign language.” It is amazing how willing people are to help and make themselves understood. Never had any trouble over seas, and have been to 5 of the 7 Continents (missed Antartica, and Australia).
