"Get a life!" is a common admonition, one more easily uttered than accomplished. Tim Lachowski's cartoon panel of the same name offers telling glimpses of the process in all its awkward absurdity. Whether or not its sly dry capture of life’s rimshot moments helps readers achieve the goal, it faithfully provides those engaged in the attempt an insightful daily laugh.

Uh, do you realize active duty military work have to be available 24/7? And they are in the government. Quit with the lame fall-back jokes. I work for the government and have a lot of people who work for me who work 7 days a week with odd schedules and constantly shifting around, all to serve the military members better. And we are a microcosm.

You’re also the exception — an exception that deserves thanks and praise; but an exception nonetheless. My dad worked for the 9-to-5 Army both before and after WWII; during the war he was in the 9-to-5 Army, doing the exact same thing he did either side of the war.

Actually, I’ll ditto that to a degree. I worked in municipal government for 10 years, and one of the reasons that I left for the private sector was that my hours were AWFUL. 60-hour weeks were common, and since I was salaried, I didn’t get any compensation for the extra hours – not even comp time. Once I left for the private sector, my hours went down and my pay went up; my benefits aren’t as good, but the increased pay and fewer hours more than make up for that. Plus I’m no longer subject to the derision of scum like Lachowski.
