    If the outcome of joining the military is to be sent into illegal imperialist wars waged by the USA, it might be the first time obesity turns out to be a good thing !

    Yes, but that’s only if you count the DEVELOPING countries. Among DEVELOPED nations, the US is in 2nd place, behind Iceland. We’re also ahead of every other European nation, all of Asia, and both Australia and New Zealand.

    @Beau Nobo

    The branch of service I was in had a unit called the Special Training Battalion. A sub-unit of that was the Fat Man’s Platoon. Physical training all day. Lunch – salad. Dinner – salad.

    Funny how the right has to ring in the developing countries nowadays to get the US in the place where they’d like it to be. You’d think they’d be ashamed.

    Thanks for the useful link. Lots of good info.
    We used to run on whale oil. Maybe we can stop fracking.

    When I enllisted in ’66, they had to wave my weight, because I was well UNDER the minimum weight for my height. Which was interesting because after years of running track and cross country, I could outrun, and perform on the PT tests higher, than anyone else in my basic training company.

    Today they have trouble finding folks who can bend over to tie their boots.

    BTW: a lot of the problem is actually malnutrition, eating junk, rather than actual “over-eating”, and well, strong thumbs from gaming and texting, but the rest of the body is flab.

    i am missing the connection with Colorado. It is the ‘healthiest’ state in the union (least % of obese people)….

    The flag on the back of the… target of this cartoon… is Puerto Rico, I believe. A U.S. territory named as being among those states and territories having the highest level of obesity. Physically-fit recruits has been more difficult to find, for our military recruiters.
    Naturally, the right wing slams any attempts to even discuss (let alone address) the problem.

    Actually, that’s Colorado, one of the fittest states in the country.
