   So, Garfield actually doesn’t know how to write. We know he can’t speak to Jon except with the cat “meow”, but now he can only text that as well.

    You don’t need a smart phone to send texts.

    Garfield often uses the internet (well, he does on TV) to order food etc. He must be able to spell and type.
