    I would put a bucket under it first then shut the water off…then Fred can go get the mop…

    Let’s see what the situation is tomorrow.

    If water plumbing is the same in the UK as the USA, there should be a shut-off valve under the sink or at least at the house inlet. But if it’s a drain that’s backing up, there’s no shut-off. And what comes out the drain, well, it’s a major problem!

    Bucket, shut off, plumber. In that order.

    I often get the feeling when we’re dithering around with something and the dogs are watching in great interest that there should be a thought balloon over their heads saying, “Why on earth don’t they just [insert solution]?” It can be very disconcerting.

    When we had our house built in 1978/79, the plumber didn’t put shut-off valves under the sink. We didn’t know that until a repair had to be made several years later. My husband put shut-off valves on all the pipes whenever he replaced a sink. If we buy another house, I’ll be sure to look for shut-off valves.

    If you have Border Collies, that is probably exactly what they are thinking. :)

    @Mountaingreenery

    Actually, we do. We had one who could open a door that had a round doorknob AND a hook and eye. We had to get a hook-and-eye that had a spring-closure on it. Fortunately they’re very good-natured about living with….well, you know….humans. ;-)

    I found out the hard way that our shutoff valve is outside.
