We haven’t used 1 and 2 cent coins in Oz for well over 20 years.

I mentioned this once to a friend in the US during a visit. He said it would never happen there because people would complain about their rights being violated when they couldn’t get exact change. (Special: Only $19.99 !!)

And places would have to round to the nearest nickel. If they round it up, I would walk out. A smart business would advertise always rounding down.

over 2, 3, or even 4 cents youre not goign to buy something? thats just silly. half the time i dont take the pennies anyway, too annoying to carry them around. I hope they do get rid of the penny, its about time.

In Canada, they simply round up or down based on the regular rules. Apparently between the two you end up generally breaking even.

We got rid of $1 and $2 notes in the 1980’s and replaced them with coins. The smallest Oz note is the $5 bill.

I say it’s OK … most people who give you their 2 cents end up giving you half a dollar more than you wanted …

To make it fun, the rounding only happens when you pay cash, in Canada that is now about 15% of all transactions, otherwise we use debt cards. The debt/credit uses the exact amount.

All this because the US Treasury keeps printing more money so the US Government can spend 42% more than their income. It makes your wages worth less and the cost of living go up.

At the same time we eliminate the penny, we should kill off the $1 bill and just go with $1 coins.

Not only should we eliminate the $1 bill, we should replace it in our cash drawers with the billions of dollars in $2 bills that are languishing in vaults with the billions of dollars in $1 coins.
If you buy something for $1.79 and pay with a $5 bill, you would get a $2 bill, a $1 coin, two dimes and a penny in change.
