Ellie you should get paid for this. However it’s good practice when April comes along. Motherhood is not for your Ellie.

She’s raises three kids, more or less by herself, to be successful, decent people. Yeah, motherhood is totally not for her…

And it’s spelled “Elly” not “Ellie”…

There is a long-running theme in the comic strip by Elly that the children do things intentionally in order to upset her, and this thought today in the comic strip falls right in line with that. While we may not personally agree with Elly’s belief she is being persecuted by a child, I cannot fault Lynn Johnston for the consistency of her character writing when it comes to Elly Patterson. She holds this belief steadfastly through Michael, Elizabeth and April and even carries it on through Merrie and Robin.

For the child’s viewpoint on this, you may want to take a look at some of the recent Doonesbury strips featuring twins and their working mother….

My aunt used to use sign language with her small children. To the point that when she would say goodnight, she wood sign goodnight, and then say she was turning the light off and sign it. My mom likes to tell the story of when one night, when my aunt was putting her child to bed, he started crying. When she asked what was wrong, the child gave her the sign for the light, and my aunt was able to determine that the child wanted the light left on. Kids will tell you what they want, but only if they know how!

    Lynn’s Notes:
As a new mother, with no one close by to advise me, there were times that I truly believed my son was “out to get me!” When you do everything possible to stop a baby from crying and they still go on and on and on, it’s easy for a novice to think a baby does things like this on purpose. I came very close to shaking him one night and called my social worker the next day for help. I can see why some parents just can’t cope — especially if they’re on their own.
