she goes out to exercise to have some adult conversation with other women that are there for the same thing. They walk on the treadmill and talk about their lives, children, husbands, parents, and such,it gives them a way to voice concerns and get advice and opinions from other women with the same issues. Also to get away from John and his snerky commnets. lol

Men used to do that too- it was called the local beer joint.

I don’t think you find many dentists in a local beer joint. Makes you wonder though.. if “men” go to beer joints then it would follow that a dentist is not a manly profession.

Why would she want to exercise at home and listen to John’s snarky remarks? Besides which he wouldn’t be too thrilled at the cost of some of those exercise machines.

Not only John but the kids would be constantly interrupting her “Mom? Can you do this for me? Mom, can you do that for me?”

Maybe that’s why I do all my workouts at home: free weights and crunches etc on one day and elliptical and dance on the next (so something every day) . No one here to interrupt – and if my man comes to visit, He’d give me plenty of excercise, as he does when I travel to visit him. ;-D

    Lynn’s Notes:
This is true. I exercise longer if a friend suffers with me. My favourite exercise still …is shopping.

“And she wouldn’t have to put up with John’s snarky comments”
    .
Susan, you do realize your daily “snarky” comments about John are much worse than his. You have said you are not married. I am sure all men are glad you didn’t. None of us would want to put up with your snarky comments.

Without support from friends there is small incentive to exercise at home as seen by the number of donated exercise equipment donated to charities after being used a
few times. It’s not just snarky remarks from either spouse,
it’s also interruptions from the exercise regimen.

I think John’s right: when it comes to something like exercising, misery really DOES love company! I don’t know about anyone else, but I find it a whole lot easier to do a dreaded chore of any kind if there’s someone there by my side that’s “suffering” right along with me!!!!! ;-)

She seems to be in good company; sometimes the negativity on this forum kind of takes my breath away.

I figure most of these negative posters have either never married, or have never kept a marriage going very long. No marriage could survive the hypersensitivity of some of these people.

In communication terms, John doesn’t seem any less sensitive than most husbands, nor does Ellie. Whatever might have destroyed Lynn’s marriage, John’s and Ellie’s seem to be pretty typical of successfully long married people.

I enjoy the comic, but I often skip comments altogether. I find the snarky posts tiresome.

People who have a good marriage (like myself) see the dialogue in this strip (and others) and see playful banter

My wife and I banter all the time and it’s a sign of how much we love each other, although the words themselves taken out of context might seem negative to someone who doesn’t *get" it

People bring their own lives and issues to GoComics and their comments can be quite revealing about their lives, enough to make me feel very sorry for the miserable lives some of these people must be living
