Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

In some cases, they’re one in the same.

So she can watch her kids and get paid anyway.
Not a bad deal.

Clearly, a man doesn’t get the idea of office-daycare. Sigh!

My boss, for whom I have worked since 2008, has never had a problem with me bringing my daughters to work with me if needed. When he first got a TV in his office, I told my girls to NOT ask to watch the TV, but the very first thing out of HIS mouth was, “Hi, girls! Do you want to watch TV?” Best boss ever!

I would think that Michael is at school.

you are so lucky. I never had a job where I could take my children to work with me if I had to.

Lynn’s Notes:
The changes in my studio space and the hiring of new staff made work-related gags easier to do. Now, I was dealing with a group of people, my job had become a real business, and we had an established routine. In the strip it would not have made sense to have Elly suddenly confronting a situation like this herself, so I gave her a part-time, more believable job. The only thing about this strip that was true was – we really were all mothers!

Why doesn’t John take Elizabeth to work with him? Must be a sexist pig!
I am sure ALL of us would love to go to a dentist and have his little children play with his tools as he gives us a root canal.

My children were always with me when I worked — I was a trapeze performer and did my act 90 feet in the air. Now I’m a great-grandmother, and can’t do even a single pull-up!

Elly got MY dream job! I wouldn’t even have to bring my kids to work, their teenagers. I have the training and education to work in libraries, but since Elly’s young days libraries aren’t hiring.

@Jenn
I think it was after April was born Elly tried the same thing. April screamed and distrubed the office. John then said to Elly “Taking the baby to work is not going to work.” Elly actually agreed with him and asked how he knew, to which he replied “Just a hunch”, as evidenced by how Elly was stooped from carrying April in her shoulder sack!
