Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Mike isn’t in a good state right now. Once I made the mistake of looking away and got into a choke hold. I just hope it didn’t dmage me. Never been beaten like poor Mike was.

I feel so sorry for Mike at the moment. Bullying is a terrible thing and I understand his anger.

Look out, Brad! Mike might just get to the point that he’s had enough. My 5-yr old did, and his brother had to pull him off the neighborhood bully before he did some serious damage!

Lynn’s Notes:
I loved comic books and considered myself a superhero. Not a female superhero with a huge bust, skimpy costume, and impossible sexy powers (these women were Barbies compared to me!) — I was a REAL superhero. If I saw a smaller kid being bullied by a bigger kid, I’d take the guy on — even if it meant getting my dress torn or my face bloodied. I was a fighter, and when the mood struck, the energy I could put into a good punch-up amazed me.

I wonder if Brad knows how lucky he reazlly was. The class bully is the wrong one to be hitting with spitballs.

When is being bumped by an eraser equal to a beating? Seems only “fair” then by that yard stick used by the bully that Mike take a lead pipe and cave in the bully’s skull. It is only disproportional to what happened to him. Does my exaggeration penetrate your skull in why the response was all wrong? You sounded like you agreed with the bully, well I don’t.

Well La de da. If you got your little rear stomped hard enough I bet that would have ended your career.

Some friend Lawrence is. First he stands back and watches Michael getting beaten up and does nothing. Then he mocks Michael for beating up a bush instead of beating up Brad. Michael needs to find a new friend who will actually stand up for him and not make fun of him after he’s been hurt.

Moses talked with a bush and ended up in the wilderness for forty years. Not for me, thanks.
