Marty Links was the creator of the comic strip “Emmy Lou” which ran in newspapers all over the world for over 35 years. Marty Links was a pioneer-- a woman cartoonist at a time when the cartoon business was really a boy’s club. For over 40 years, Marty would whisk through the San Francisco Chronicle city room delivering a weekly batch of cartoons with the same gusto as Emmy Lou would.

This is actually really true and very funny. Also, Emmy Lou does like her ponchos, doesn’t she?

I think a lot of us liked ponchos back then. As a college freshman in 1967, I wore my grandmother’s wool tweed cape.

My grandma knit me a poncho that I was happy to wear in the early 70’s.

The poncho got new visibility, thanks to Ugly Betty and Guadalajuara.

Why does her friend have two different shoes on?

Her shoes match my socks!

Ponchos are a nice fashion accessory and can protect you from the cold or rain.

A real sentiment indeed.

Hi! Marty’s son-in-law here. Really luv the comments. Thanx so much!
We thought we’d start out with a few Emmy Lou comics from 1970 and then branch out from there. We’ll definitely read all comments and try our best to take them into consideration as we move forward. btw…Marty loved ponchos especially during that era.
Also…every Monday I’ll add in this comment section a fun Marty story or fact. I’ll post one tomorrow, my favorite, that happened to me when having lunch with Marty and Charles “Sparky” Schultz up at Sparky’s skating rink in Santa Rosa.
Thanx!

Correction! I spelled Schulz wrong(Schultz) in my last comment. To many Schultz’s in my life I guess!!

My guess is that the shoes are the same, and that they’re white sandals being worn with dark tights. Either the girl’s foot has slipped so far back that we don’t see the toes of her back foot, or Marty forgot to color them in! Best explanation I can think of.

Hi annieb1012!
I better be careful how I explain this Annie…I do feel Marty is still looking over her Emmy Lou! She might’ve missed drawing in the dark tights on the left foot. It happens. Marty always said “She was the quickest draw in the West”

So true!…. I wonder what Emmy Lou’s friends name is? Also, didn’t she have a dog?
