"Garry Trudeau is the premier American social and political satirist of his time." -Newsweek Doonesbury has managed to be articulate, abrasive, political, compassionate, misunderstood, misprinted, and outrageous - but one thing it's never been is complacent. Garry Trudeau's creation has chronicled American history and culture in a parallel universe. And through it all, Doonesbury has always been honest, entertaining, and thought-provoking.

GOP motto: if you can’t win elections normally, cheat there’s no tomorrow.

I seem to recall some election rigging in the 2000 race.

The only reason the GOP has control of the House is that they made sure most Democrats are in a few districts so even if they vote more than the Republicans they can still lose. Ingenious in an evil way.

If BOTH parties would expend as much time and energy trying to actually fix the problems in the country that they do in trying to cling to power through ANY means available, we’d ALL be a lot better off!
But, I do have to admit that the Republicans have made grasping power into an art form!

Is the Republican Party going to “stop being the stupid party?” Not likely; they have their strategy. Consider: half of all Americans are of below average intelligence, and for the last 30 years the Republicans have been playing that half of our citizenry by either scaring the bejabbers out of them or making them feel right proud of their ignorance. In addition, the GOP has given succor and validation to an unsavory rabble of delusional Bible thumpers, paranoid gun nuts, venomous racists, sexists, authoritarian wingnuts, deeply selfish libertarians and haters and bigots of every stripe. From these fine folks the Thugs have assembled a very significant and motivated minority. Indeed, in too many areas of our country they are a majority. The OTHER result has been that pretty much anyone of good will who is sane and reasonably intelligent finds the Republican Party of today to be toxic, repulsive and very nearly traitorous. It’s a shame. I’ll confess that once upon a time I was a proud “Goldwater Republican” myself. No more. I am very certain that Goldwater himself would no longer sanction what the Republican Party has become.

Ike tried to warn us, careful not to put himself in the crosshairs, that the coup d’etat was already beginning, powered by (most of) the same folks Gen. Smedley Butler outed when they tried to overthrow FDR.
11/22/63 (JFK) was only a small part of it.
It’s accelerating, though I’m not sure it’s complete.
Ignorance and woefully incomplete education is certainly not helping. Teach at least your own kids how to think!

POTUS could get off his butt and lead the country not trying to divide the country with his campaigning. All politicians should be required to pass a budget for the next 2 years before they take another effing vacation.

@diver710
However, that budget needs to be a viable budget that does not punish Americans for being in the Middle Class or worse a part of the working poor. And taxes on the wealthy have never been lower than they are right now,, Further, as the wealthy have increased their wealth by some 300 times in the last 20 years or so while holding the average wage of the Middle Class down to practically no increase at all, just perhaps it is indeed time to bring investment taxes up to at least in the same range as those federal taxes on wage earners.

Most Democrats are concentrated in urban areas. They did that to themselves. Not everything is a grand plot…

@Mark
And most Publicans live in ex-urb rings and sparsely populated rural regions. So, the districting becomes: central district with the ring divvied up and combined with the rural areas, or do you pie-section the urban center and combine it with the ring+? The first way creates far fewer D areas, the second far fewer R areas. Guess which way it went last time…

What is “honest Man” holding in the first two panels?
Is he texting his Republican cronies on how to bungle the next election?

@AlexanderTheGoodEnough
If you are talking about America, then of course half the population has to be below the aveage intelligence while the other half has to be above average intelligence. Average does not mean normal. Now take The United States and compare test score in say math and science and compare it with the other industrialized countries of the world. We are in big trouble. Two things made this country great, immigration and natural resources.
