Julie Larson began writing The Dinette Set comic in 1990, then called Suburban Torture, offering a satire on middle class culture. The Dinette Set became syndicated in 1997. When asked where Julie gets all of her ideas, she admits there is only one way to write a daily comic: write about what you know. "I make no bones about who’s really talking in The Dinette Set," says Julie, who is writer, director and cast of The Dinette Set. "If we can’t make fun of ourselves, who will?"

Yeah, Patty, use Burl’s list of excuses that he uses at HIS place of employment. That’s sure to go over big. BTW, looks like we’ve got some missing finials again.

Good advice, guys. Burl’s got a PhD in malingering.
I see Joy is back to smelling old milk again; I guess Burl is over his latest “upset” so’s she can’t get high smelling his….

I would expect these clowns to have a “Calliope Music” CD at their house. Maybe they play it to offer homage to their “Clown” painting. It goes along with Joy’s makeup and fashion sense also. Hey, maybe this lot were actually clowns that got thrown out of a Circus for NOT acting?

Foot canal? I never heard of that one. Maybe Patty ran out of sick days because of her foot pain. She never mentioned that idea. Another round of brain bleach please!

@gmforde I thought the same thing-the lettering is bad, but it is ‘Root’.
I’ve had to have root canals and other minor medical tests and have always been allowed a sick day. I generally informed my supervisor about the time off when I made the appointment and would hand in my time off request. Since most places have replaced sick leave with personal time, I would schedule personal time. Never had a bit of trouble using it.

RE: yesterday’s comment:
Yes, sadly you are right. However, I believe that DS is still in newspapers, personally, I never received a newspaper that carried it, but she has to accommodate as long as she is being carried in the paper.
I am an avid Dark Horse reader and you are right there too, I love how he seems to have no barriers. The elevator seen the other day enhances your point. I notice he also uses simplified backgrounds, though.
Another reason for simpler backgrounds is ti make it easier for the colorist to work, when it is on the web.
At the moment I am simplifying my own to hopefully get into newspapers while there are still some around. It is a shame they are disappearing, there always was some hominess or comfort that I get browsing a newspaper that I don’t experience when I read it online. Even when I read our local paper online using a format that emulates our actual paper. I also hate straddling a laptop on the toilet.
I never colored my strip yet, but I recently have done some comics that I am going to submit to some online magazines. I did a panel in detail and have spent more time coloring it than drawing it. When the paper is finally out of my grasp, I will do my strip strictly for the web. Then I will make a choice. Either add more detail, which honestly I enjoy doing, or keeping it more simple to color it. I guess it will depend on what survives better. There I am divided. I love the detail, yet nothing spiffs it up like good color.
Have a good weekend Crustodians!

The very sad thing about this strip is that I nave been privy to this sort of lameness. Non-regional. People are people, no matter where they live.

Yes, as Patty has surely told someone at her office of medical work, they will not be suspicious in the least if her car or alarm clock fails he tomorrow (especially if she announces that it WILL happen).

Thanks for your interesting observations….

Based on your comments…I’ll just be happy with the way it is and enjoy it as it unfolds… ! ! !

If Patty has used up all her sick days, maybe she is a chip off the ol’ Burl after all. And I notice Dottie’s Discount Duds had a Valentine’s sale as evidenced by Joys blouse. No Ding Dongs or HO Ho’s, they are reduced to eating little tiny cookies, oh the horror!
