    This hobby should be stamped out.

    I met someone once who bought hundreds of “Elvis” stamps when they came out. They were totally convinced that they were going to go up in value, and that they would make a lot of money from them!
    Idiot.

    @Bruno Zeigerts

    It is actually useful. All the stamps bought by collectors are not used. So the postal Service doesn’t have to handle all that mail they would otherwise if all the stamps sold were used.

    Maybe just a small percentage, but still is free money for them.

    Many collect stamps simply because they like them. Not for any future value.

    Because they are Pretty Things? Humans are attracted by “shiny” baubles…. Regardless, completely circular logic is so satisfying, inasmuch as it’s impenetrable.

    Everything is worth what people think it is.

    Even gold is only worth what people think it is.

    (As an example, the ancient Egyptians had a lot of gold, but little silver, so they valued silver more).

    The elvis stamps will be worth something in a century or so.

    Those Elvis stamps aren’t worthless; they’re worth their face value.

    I’d tell you what a really great comment that was, but I know that you don’t respond to philately.

    Stamp collecting also encourages interest in geography and history.

    @BRI-NO-MITE!!

    Yes. I told him that in about a hundred years or so those stamps would be worth something. Exactly $.32, what he paid for them!

    Dilbert should try extreme stamp collecting: pasting stamps in a scrapbook while you ski off of a Himalayan mountain!

    If the stamp is so valuable, why is he handling it with bare hands?
